Overview
Gladys Porter Zoo is seeking a motivated and hands-on Licensed Veterinary Technician to support the Animal Health team within a dynamic zoological hospital setting serving a collection of approximately 1,500 animals.
This position focuses on direct patient care within a zoo and wildlife veterinary clinic, assisting with diagnostics, anesthesia, treatment, and daily hospital operations across a wide variety of species. The Technician works closely with veterinarians and senior staff to ensure high-quality care for both zoo animals and native wildlife patients.
The ideal candidate is confident in clinical skills, adaptable across species, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail, teamwork, and responsiveness are essential to maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in medicine and surgery
- Monitor anesthesia and recovery
- Perform lab diagnostics
- Assist with medications
- Provide care for hospitalized animals
- Assist with restraint
- Maintain records
- Support hospital cleanliness
- Assist wildlife rehab
- Participate in emergency response

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Minimum Qualifications
• Associate degree from an AVMA-accredited program
• Licensed or eligible within 6 months
• Strong clinical skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in exotics or wildlife
• Anesthesia experience
• Spanish language skills
Working Conditions & Requirements
• Flexible schedule including weekends/on-call
• Lift up to 25 lbs
• Maintain Texas license
• Valid driver’s license
