Veterinary and Rehabilitation Center of Cape Elizabeth, Maine (VRCCE), an AAHA certified, small animal veterinary practice is seeking a full-time veterinary technician to work with our growing team. A veterinary technology degree and significant experience is preferred, but a positive outlook, hardworking demeanor and dedication to the profession, colleagues and patients is most important.

Veterinary Technician Job Description:

Medical Support Responsibilities:

Assist Veterinarians in all areas of medical practice including, but not limited to:

Effective, compassionate and fear-free patient restraint, treatment and follow up of dogs, cats and other species
Obtain patient histories and prepare patients for veterinary exams by assessing stability
Accurately collect specimens (blood, urine, feces, etc.), execute in house lab testing and process outside lab samples
Perform intravenous catheterization, phlebotomy, intubation and properly administer injectable, oral and topical medications
Accurately dispense medications and products as prescribed by the veterinarian
Assist in humane euthanasia and respectful disposition of remains
Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and assist in surgery
Skillfully perform dental radiographs, prophylaxis and charting as dictated by vet, assist in oral surgery
Produce diagnostic radiographs as requested
Dress wounds and injuries
General Hospital and Client Support

Actively participate in the effective and efficient running of a busy hospital environment by:

Exhibiting strong customer service skills and demonstrating compassionate, professional, ethical, positive interactions with all clients in all situations
Educating clients with sound, proven information using clear, understandable terminology
Cleaning, preparing and maintaining the hospital, including all equipment and instruments
Maintaining a professional demeanor including a neat, clean, uniformed appearance
Assisting reception with inbound calls in a friendly and courteous manner to facilitate client needs
Assessing, maintaining and ordering medical supplies and inventory
As necessary, opening and closing the office including end of day activities, and securing controlled drugs and premises

The successful candidate will:

Be a licensed veterinary technician or have accumulated enough on the job experience to pass the veterinary technology licensing exam
Must have experience with laboratory and clinical techniques, uses of veterinary drugs, instruments, anesthetic and surgical nursing and monitoring equipment
Proficient with computers and veterinary software (Cornerstone preferred) to succeed in a paperless office environment
Must be of good moral character, have an even disposition and be able to work professionally and effectively with people and pets in a range of situations, ranging from emergencies to wellness exams
Be a good problem solver and display common sense and sound judgment when working without supervision and under emotional stress
Physically capable of lifting 50 pounds and performing all the applicable duties including moderately heavy work’

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
