Overview

Gladys Porter Zoo is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Licensed Veterinary Technologist to join our Animal Health team, supporting the daily operations of a busy zoological hospital serving a diverse collection of approximately 1,500 animals.

This role is centered within a zoo and wildlife veterinary clinic environment, providing care across a wide range of taxa while also supporting the systems that keep the hospital running effectively. In addition to hands-on clinical responsibilities, the Technologist plays a key role in maintaining accurate medical records, managing inventory and controlled substances, and supporting regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate brings strong clinical skills along with the ability to manage complex information, maintain consistency in documentation, and contribute to a well-organized, high-functioning veterinary program aligned with AZA standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in zoological medicine and surgery
  • Monitor anesthesia and recovery
  • Perform lab diagnostics
  • Maintain audit-ready medical records
  • Oversee ZIMS data integrity
  • Maintain controlled substance logs
  • Support inventory and ordering
  • Coordinate communication across teams
  • Assist with necropsy and wildlife rehab
  • Participate in emergency response

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an AVMA-accredited program
• Licensed or eligible within 6 months
• Strong clinical and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years experience
• ZIMS experience
• Inventory/compliance experience
• Spanish language skills

Working Conditions & Requirements

• Flexible schedule including weekends, holiday, on-call
• Lift up to 25 lbs
• Maintain Texas license
• Valid driver’s license
