Veterinary Assistant/Technician – Job Description
A Veterinary Technician or Assistant for the SPCA of Luzerne County is a compassionate and knowledgeable team player. This individual will serve as medical staff providing direct care to all animals within the organization, ensuring the smooth medical operations of both the feline/small animal area and kennels. This position assists in all aspects of providing medical care for the animals within the organization and working cooperatively with the veterinarians employed here. This individual will work cooperatively with all of the departments of the shelter to monitor the overall wellness of the animals in the care of the LCSPCA.
Responsibilities of the VA
· Assisting and Performing surgery with our veterinarians
· Maintaining a clean and safe clinic for animals to prevent the spread of illness and disease
· Scheduling surgeries/exams for adopted pets, foster pets and staff pets
· Sanitizing and disinfection of instruments for surgery
· Providing post-surgical care for adopted pets
· Keeping and maintaining an accurate drug log of all controlled medications that are dispensed, and ensuring all controlled substances are locked up
· Cleaning and caring for the animals housed in the clinic area
· Putting away all supplies and medications ordered by the veterinarian
· Providing documents of bills owed by staff members for veterinary services, and providing an accurate record of spays and neuters performed daily(also to pay the spay-neuter vet accurately)
· Keeping an accurate record of all lab/fecal results sent out by the veterinary team
· Record all medical notes, surgeries, medications, and microchips preformed/dispensed/implants to each animal in the computer
· Calling and notifying adopters when their animals are available to be sent home with discharge instructions
· Other duties as assigned
**Please note – The SPCA of Luzerne County is an open admission animal shelter and does preform euthanasia on site.**
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Mathemetics, reading and listening skills, animal handling (preferred), veterinary technician skills preferred.
